Casper Ruud Storms Into First Italian Open Final
Casper Ruud won a big match on clay courts in Rome. The Norwegian tennis star beat local favorite Luciano Darderi in the semifinals. Ruud won with a fast score of 6-1, 6-1. This victory puts Ruud into his first-ever final at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.
The exciting match took place on the famous red clay at Stadio Centrale inside the Foro Italico. Ruud looked sharp from the very first point. He relied on his powerful forehand to control the game. He also used a bright blue Yonex tennis racket to hit clean shots.
Rain Delay Can Not Stop Ruud’s Flow
The tennis match faced a big challenge due to bad weather. Dark clouds moved over Rome and brought heavy rain. The umpire had to stop the play in the first set. At that time, Ruud was already leading the match 4-1 and had a break point.
The players had to wait out a long one-hour and 59-minute rain delay in the locker rooms. Many players lose their focus during long breaks. However, Ruud stayed very calm and ready. When the rain stopped, the court workers dried the red clay. Ruud came back out and played even better. He won five out of the next six points right away to close out the first set 6-1.
Tired Darderi Fights Hard at Home
Luciano Darderi had a wonderful run in his home country tournament. This was his very first time reaching a big ATP Masters 1000 semifinal. The passionate Italian crowd cheered loudly for him on Campo Centrale.
Sadly, Darderi was very tired during the match. His previous quarterfinal match did not finish until 2:30 in the morning. He had spent nine long hours on court during his earlier matches. Because of this, he did not have enough energy left to run down Ruud’s heavy shots.
In the second set, Ruud quickly jumped ahead to a 4-0 lead. Darderi tried his best to fight back and even got a break point at 1-4. But Ruud saved it quickly and finished the match in just 66 minutes of total play time.
